Why Grid Connections Are the Biggest Barrier to EV Charging Infrastructure in the UK

EV charging demand in the UK isn't slowing down. Charge point operators, fleet depot managers, retail site owners and logistics hubs are all accelerating their infrastructure rollouts, and for good reason. But there's one factor quietly stalling projects across the country: the grid.

In many parts of the UK, available power capacity simply isn't there. And what most CPOs don't realise until they're deep into a project is that installing the chargers is usually the straightforward part. Securing the grid connection to run them is where timelines start to slip.

Ultra-rapid charging hubs are a different infrastructure challenge

Ultra-rapid charging hubs and high-power fleet depots now draw the kind of electrical load you'd associate with small industrial facilities. That changes everything about how a project needs to be planned.

Suddenly you're dealing with DNO connection applications, capacity studies, network reinforcement works, contestable works, wayleaves and easements, and trying to design infrastructure that can accommodate demand five or ten years from now. Any one of those can push a delivery timeline back by months.

Grid capacity is now a recognised bottleneck in the UK energy transition

This isn't just anecdotal. The IEA has described electricity grids globally as "a critical bottleneck" for connecting new demand, warning that connection queues are slowing deployment across energy and transport infrastructure worldwide.

In the UK specifically, Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) are under growing pressure to reform the grid connections process following widespread delays. Hundreds of projects are currently facing revised connection dates, with queue backlogs expanding rapidly as electrification accelerates across transport and industry.

For charge point operators planning new sites or expanding existing networks, that pressure is only going to increase.
