The UK's transition to electric transport is one of the largest infrastructure programmes this country has ever attempted. Every forecast says the same thing: the volume of charging hubs, grid connections and supporting civils that needs delivering over the next decade is vast, and it will ask a great deal of the businesses delivering it: pace, precision and capacity in equal measure.

As Managing Director of Gigawatt, that's the problem I spend most of my time on. Not any single project (our teams deliver those nationwide, every week) but the question behind all of them: how do you build an infrastructure company that gets faster and sharper as it grows, rather than slower and heavier?

There's a risk that comes with growth, and we've been determined to design it out from day one: more projects can quietly mean more administration, more spreadsheets, more layers between a client asking a question and getting an answer. We've built Gigawatt deliberately to avoid that, and I want to set out how.

Our strategy in one sentence

Put our people's time where judgement is needed, and put AI to work on everything else.

That's it. Everything we've built since we started this initiative follows from that sentence. Designing a grid connection, weighing programme risk, solving a problem on site, standing behind a commitment to a client: that's human work, done by some of the most experienced people in this sector, and it always will be. But around every one of those judgements sits a thick layer of administration: data entry, document processing, scheduling, reporting, reconciling. That layer is where delivery businesses traditionally drown as they grow. So we've systematically handed it to AI.

We've built a fleet of AI-run workers: managed agents, each with a single defined job, working around the clock inside our systems. We call them Gigabots (what else would a company called Gigawatt call them?), and every one of them exists to remove a delay, an error, or a distraction between our people and the work that actually needs them.

What it looks like in practice.

From the moment an enquiry reaches us to the day a site is energised, there's intelligence working behind every stage. New enquiries are already moving through our systems before anyone has opened an email. Grid offers are processed at a pace that keeps programmes moving. Won work becomes a live, fully connected project without the usual set-up lag.

The same is true through delivery and the back office. Our teams on the ground always work from an accurate, current picture of the week ahead. Our project finances are monitored continuously, so anything needing a decision reaches the right person early. And our project managers start every morning already knowing exactly where their projects stand.

What matters is the effect clients feel: quick, well-informed responses from the very first enquiry, programmes built on current information, and a delivery team whose attention is on the site, not the admin.

Why we're doing it this way.

Two beliefs sit underneath all of this.

People

I can't speak for anyone else's business, I can only build ours, and I believe the way to grow is to multiply your best people rather than dilute them. Every project manager, designer and estimator at Gigawatt should operate with the leverage of systems doing the groundwork beneath them, so that as we take on more work, the experience behind each project gets stronger, not thinner.

Knowledge & data

Every decision made inside a business, and every problem solved, generates something valuable: a record of what actually happened and what worked. When that record is captured, structured and put behind the next decision, the whole business gets smarter with every job. That's a big part of why we're doing this. We're building Gigawatt so that nothing we learn is ever lost, and every decision we make is better informed than the last.

The company we're building.

Gigawatt is a national business delivering some of the most demanding EV charging and grid connection projects in the UK, and we intend to be delivering far more of them. The strategy for getting there isn't more layers and more overhead. It's exceptional people, given exceptional leverage: an operation designed so that growth makes us faster, not slower.
